National Science Week

Each year, in March, we celebrate National Science Week with a variety of Science activities. These creep into other subjects in the curriculum, assemblies, breaktimes and even into lunch!

Year 3 girls investigate plants

All pupils in the school, from the oldest to the very youngest, have the opportunity to carry out some science investigations. National Science Week sees the culmination of the 'Science Challenge' where pupils in Years 3 - 7 plan and carry out an extended investigation. They make a presentation of their findings which is judged as a part of a whole-school competition.

Science

Science is a subject relevant to almost every aspect of our lives. It stimulates curiosity, interest and enjoyment in the world around us - and in ourselves!
Pupils at The Downs, Malvern College Prep are encouraged to learn through practical experience and problem solving.
From Year 3, Science lessons are held in our stunning new science laboratories which are well resourced and house state-of-the-art equipment including interactive white-boards and networked computers. Initially Science is taught as a general subject following the QCA science curriculum.
In the summer term of Year 6 Science splits into the three disciplines of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Pupils then work towards Common Entrance and Scholarship examinations.
The subject is further brought to life through visits to Science Centres such as Thinktank and to the Cheltenham Science Festival.
