Downs Terminology - What is ... ?
New pupils (and parents!) will come up against a range of terms at the school that may or may not be familiar. Here we list a few of the most common, together with a brief explanation of each:
| Badger |
The school magazine (published each autumn), and the school mascot |
| Commem |
The end of academic year service, speeches and prize giving, usually held on the last Saturday afternoon of the summer term |
| Exeat |
A closed weekend. Most exeats start at 4.45pm on Fridays and boarders may come back between 6.30pm and 7.30pm on Sunday |
| FOD |
Friends of the Downs - a parent body responsible for fund raising and fun! |
| Hobbies |
Activity sessions held on Saturday mornings for Years 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 & 8 (Year 2 children are invited to join in during the summer term only). |
| Leaders |
Year 8 children given extra responsibilities and recognised by their red and green striped ties |
| Pics |
A supervised relaxation session for Years 3, 4 and 5 whilst senior prep continues. |
| Siesta |
The period of rest or play between the end of lunch and the start of afternoon lessons. |
| Sundays |
Formal dress |
| Ticking Off |
Not a disciplinary talking to, rather the opposite of registration. The on-duty member of the school's staff must tick children leaving school off on the register. Check your child has been ticked off before you go. |
