Young Town Planners Experience.
A 'Planned' Lego Town.
The session began with a talk from the instructor, describing the basic logistics of house building. The children each then constructed an individual building and once finished joined in the group to create a town scene. The scene was created taking town planning into account and considering environmental implications.
The Young Engineers K’Nex Challenge.
This is a national primary school challenge designed to encourage imagination, creativity and ingenuity. The year 3 and 4 pupils had to design and make a lifting bridge to go over a canal using K’Nex.
An attractive fairground ride.
Years 5 and 6 had to design and build a ride for a fairground using K’Nex and motors. This proved far more tricky as the pupils had to think about how the design could attract children to ride on it as well as it remaining sturdy.
Design and Technology
Mr Holbourn, Year 3, the Headmaster and Mrs Ramsay unveil the D & T Mural
Design and Technology is taught at The Downs formally from Year 3 upwards and this year's youngest students have been involved in producing the 'Design and Technology' mural displayed in the entrance foyer. The seventeen members of the class each took responsibility for the design and, making of a letter; the constituent parts being assembled to form the mural as a whole.
Year 3 Design and Technology Mural Project
The project helped to define some of the key elements of Design and Technology embracing the use of different materials, design styles of the fonts used and a variety of surface finishes. In letter 'N' of Design you will notice both some key board characters and a computer mouse acknowledging the importance of computers in the D & T. area; in letter 'E' of Technology you will see the use of electronic components in the embellishment of that letter. Food Technology is also represented within the artistic element of the mural.
